Mercedes ML320 ( 98> ) Air Filter Replacement |
This is a very easy project with no special tools required. The only thing to keep in mind is to protect your fingers from getting injured when opening the clips shown in the second pic from the left.
If using bare fingers to open the clips, they will hit your finger quite hard when they pop. A better practice would be to use a straight screwdriver or a pair of pliers to lift the clips.
Once all the clips are open, the top cover should easily come off as shown in pic No. 3 from left. You should be able to lift the old air filter out of the box and inspect it to see how dirty the filter is. You should check between the fins to get a good idea of how blocked the filter actually is as it may not show just from the outer surface.
Clean the inside of the filter box to get rid of any dirt etc. and insert the new filter with the fins facing down into the box. Make sure the filter is seated properly in it’s place by going around the box edges and pressing it down if lifted.
Put the air filter box cover in it’s place and make sure it all lines up properly before closing all the clips and making sure its air tight.

It’s very important to keep air filter boxes air tight as any leak would cause problems in starting, loss of performance and also more importantly, lower the fuel economy which would hurt even more on an already thirsty ML320
Nice topic, very helpful. My Mercedes performance air filter has just arrive last day, through this write up I now know what to do with my air filter. Thank you for the very helpful tips.
