BMW E36 Headlight Replacement

Replacing the headlights on the BMW E36 is pretty straight forward as shown in the pics above. Firstly, you need to remove the rubber suction cup and the air mass sensor from behind the headlight. Then you turn the connector 1 ( pic 1 ) anticlockwise to disconnect and then disconnect connector 2.



Next step is to disconnect the retaining clip from the side indicator or corner lamp and remove the unit as shown in pic 2 from left. Now you need to remove the radiator cover by removing the screws as shown in pic 3. After the radiator cover has been removed, the screws above the headlight as shown in pic 4 need to be removed. Care must the taken not to twist the expanding rivets along with these screws and a wrench should be used to brace the rivets.



The light should be free now and can be removed. When installing the new headlight, the bottom screws should be inserted first and tightened upto the last thread at the same time bracing the expanding rivets. The new headlight can be adjusted to keep the gap on all sides same as original. After everything has been put back together in reverse order, the headlight beam can be adjusted by the load leveller screws if required.
